Biography of Ed Accura

Ed Accura is a British filmmaker, musician, producer, author, podcaster, and a leading advocate for water safety and diversity in aquatics. He is best known for his ground breaking documentary series "Blacks Can't Swim" and as the co-founder of the Black Swimming Association (BSA). Through creative media, such as music, film, and storytelling, he strives to challenge stereotypes, promote inclusivity, and prevent drownings within African, Caribbean, and Asian communities.

Born in London and raised between the UK and Ghana, Accura learned to swim as an adult at around the age of 53. His journey was driven by concerns for his young daughter's safety around water. His personal struggle with aquaphobia and the generational cultural attitudes toward swimming heavily inform his advocacy work.

Early Life and Music Career

Accura’s artistic journey began in the 1990s, transitioning from experimental avant-garde production to hip-hop. He co-founded the UK hip-hop crew 617 and launched Accura Records, releasing various projects under different names, including solo albums such as "Observations of a Social Misfit" (2010). In 2010, he shifted his focus to socially conscious music, with notable releases including "Talk 2 Frank" (2016) and the "Bear A Witness" campaign, which promotes kindness toward the homeless.

Transition to Water Safety Advocacy

A holiday in Barbados in 2018 inspired the creation of the song "A Film Called Blacks Can’t Swim," which led to the documentary series. The first instalment, "A Film Called Blacks Can't Swim" (2019), explored his personal journey and the systemic barriers to swimming within minority communities. This was followed by "Blacks Can’t Swim - The Sequel" and " Blacks Can’t Swim - Rewind." In 2020, Accura co-founded the Black Swimming Association (BSA) alongside Seren Jones, Danielle Obe, and Alice Dearing. The organisation focuses on driving research, education, representation, and access to aquatics for underrepresented groups, winning the 2022 National Lottery UK Project of the Year award.

Film, Podcasting, and Broader Work

Accura produced the acclaimed "Blacks Can't Swim" series, which is available on platforms like Amazon Prime, Sky, and Apple TV. He also created the five-part docuseries "Changing the Narrative" (2024), which premiered on YouTube during Black History Month and showcased young voices from London communities. He hosts the podcast "Why We Don’t Talk About SWIM" to further engage audiences in discussions around water safety.

Additionally, he authored a 380-page book documenting the "Blacks Can't Swim" journey, featuring behind-the-scenes stories, interviews, and visuals.

Recent Work and Impact (2025–2026)

In 2025, Accura achieved significant recognition at the Inclusion Leader Awards, winning the Inclusive Problem-Solving Award and becoming a finalist for Mentoring for Inclusion. He released the single and campaign "NO Lifeguard" (feat. Maxoo, Goldey One4, Boy Sayso and Samson Alexander), a public safety anthem urging individuals to swim only in supervised areas, inspired by the issue of preventable drownings.

In April 2026, he released the collaborative single "1 LIFE," featuring artists Maxoo, Goldey One4, Boy Sayso, Samson Alexander, and Emarvellous. This track serves as the official soundtrack for his forthcoming documentary "No Lifeguard," which delves into drowning prevention, personal narratives, and the importance of making informed choices around water safety.

The single showcases a vibrant collaboration with the emerging Afro House talents from Ogogoro Records, delivering an energizing and uplifting sound. Together, the artists convey a strong and timely message: life is precious, and its protection is a collective responsibility.

As of mid-2026, Accura remains actively involved in advocacy, aiming to reach 15 million people with life-saving water safety messages through music, conversations, and community outreach by the end of 2026.

Through his multifaceted career, Ed Accura continues to be a transformative figure who blends art, activism, and education. His efforts challenge perceptions, reduce drowning risks, and build a more inclusive aquatic future for generations to come.
